Infrastructure that grows alternative technology creation and uptake (eg. geothermal power stations, eg. electric plug-in cars, eg. fast rail powered from alternative power generation, eg. water solar distillation plants [not reverse osmosis chemical and carbon powered desalination], improved rail in metro areas, water harvesting from parking lots and rooftops and roads, etc) are all the types of infrastructure that money should be being spent on. Sadly now that the Federal Govt has thrown away our money and is in debt rather than in surplus, they have destroyed their ability to act in the public’s interest decisively.
why has the principle of the market which has generally worked well, failed so catastrophically just now?
According to a recanting Alan Greenspan last month, because corporations cannot be relied upon to act in their own interests.
Is this because they are manipulated to act in the interests of their CEO’s and favoured stockholders? I believe so.
It seems to me that the concept of ‘limited liability’ needs to be revisited, not only for the bottom line but the triple bottom line.
There is something inherently wrong with directors/CEO’s using a company to inflict environmental damage etc and just declaring bankruptcy if caught.
The same is true of sovereign states but i don’t have suggestions for that one.
I urge you all to look into supporting and encouraging the creation of new “Transition Initiatives” as a way of combating Climate Change, Peak Oil and the Global Economic Crisis.
Transition Initiatives are part of one of the biggest and most important research projects underway anywhere in the world. The Transition Initiative was started in England by Rob Hopkins and has now been adopted in 500+ locations around the globe including on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and in the Victorian township of Bell.
These Initiatives are all about developing fun, highly local ways of, reducing energy consumption, adopting sustainable skills, practices and technologies building better, more resilient communities and taking charge of our own live to cope successfully in a world after oil- a Post Carbon Community.
Just last year the price for oil on the world market has, for the first time passed $100 a barrel. The Age of Cheap Energy is over. The sooner we can acknowledge that and can start to engage our collective creativity, the less likely it is that we will sink into despondency, blame-seeking and powerlessness, and the more likely it is that we will unleash the most extraordinary and historic transition. We are alive at a pivotal moment in human history
I believe that a lower-energy, more localised future, in which we move from being consumers to being producer/consumers, where food, energy and other essentials are locally produced, local economies are strengthened and we have learned to live more within our means is a step towards something extraordinary, not a step away from something inheritantly irreplaceable.
I urge you to visit the sites listed below to learn more. I strongly believe these Initiatives are vital to securing Australia’s future.
